Two Lanterns 2008 Art Project
Ah America, are we not the land of opposites looking for a dialectic? This year Two Lanterns camp will seek to portray one example in this search with the construction of interactive el- wire display entitled American Dream / American Nightmare. This year we of Two Lanterns camp wish to put forth images of the United States’ citizens’ desire to embody the concept of Liberty (perhaps one of the noblest dreams of this nation’s collective psyche) counter poised with the equally powerful sense of entitlement in pursuing Wars of Greed. The rights of the individual in bed with the collective selfishness of our neo-doctrine manifest destiny – no wonder we sleep so restlessly.
American Dream / American Nightmare is a 35 ft. tall structure designed to support the outline of two el-wire figures that will alternate when burners passing by activate a motion sensor located at street level. One figure will be of the Statue of Liberty from the chest up and scaled such that her eyes will be at 7 ft. and her torch will top out at ~34 ft. The second figure will similarly be of a war-like helmeted figure crowned with dollar signs and holding forth an oil well as the torch for Liberty’s flame.
